Tithi Bhojan Kya Hai?

  • The Union minister, ministry of human resources development, Government of India sent letter to all the states and UTs to encourage the concepts of Tithi Bhojan Scheme on 29th November, 2014.
  • The Concept of “Tithi Bhojan”, a community participation programme was initiated by the State Government of Gujarat in Mid-day meal programme by relying on the traditional practice of providing food to large number of people on special occasions
  1. Festivals
  2. Anniversaries
  3. Birthdays
  4. Days of National Importance etc.
  • Community people provide nutritious and healthy food to the children as an additional food item or full meal on such special occasions / festivals.
  • The community contribute either a complete full meal or contribute food item in the forms of sweets, namkeens, fruits or sprouts etc. as an additional item. The Tithi Bhojan is only supplements or complements Mid Day Meal.

Foods Provided Under Tithi Bhojan Scheme

  • Food item to be provided to children may be full meal or an additional item.
  • Food articles provided to children should be as per food habits of children
  • Full meal: Combination of cereal, pulse and vegetable
  • Fruit, milk, sweets, eggs, biscuits, halwa, Chikki (Groundnut and jaggery), sprouts etc. as an addition item.
  • Seasonal food should be selected as they are nutritious and cost effective.
  • Donations may be accepted such as water filters, water coolers, fans etc.
  • Other items like plates, glasses, spoons, water filters, food processors, school bags, soaps, liquid hand wash may be provided as per children need.
  • Cash / Cheque donations are not accepted in Gujarat and other states / UTs.

Guideline to Food safety to health and hygiene

  • Fresh prepared food items may be provided to children. The expiry date should be checked for packed food
  • Food item should contain adequate nutrients and should be palatable, hygienic and operational feasible
  • Vegetables, fruits and perishable food should be selected fresh for consumption
  • Perishable food should not be stored in plastic bags as these get spoilt quickly due to lack of transpirations.
  • Containers used for serving of meal should be made of non – toxic materials
