Fortified milk Meaning
Milk is a rich source of protein, calcium and fat-soluble vitamin A and Vitamin D. When fat is remove doing processing, Vitamin D and Vitamin A are lost. As there is a white spread deficiency of Vitamin A and Vitamin d in the people of India, fortification of milk with Vitamin A and vitamin D is required.
- According to an MNMB survey and report of ICMR 2012, India has deficiency of Vitamin A and d among young children and adults particular in the case of physically less active people and Limited exposure to sunlight
How to make Fortified milk?
- The fortified milk technology is very simple. All the vitamins and minerals can be added to milk in dry powder form as well as liquid form. The fat-soluble vitamins are available in an oily form and water-soluble form.
- The toned, double toned, skimmed milk or standardized milk shall be fortified by following nutrients.

Vitamin A and Vitamin D
Vitamin A
- Vitamin A is required for vision and its deficiency leads to blindness in children below 5 years of age.
- More than 35 – 60 million people suffer from deficiency of Vitamin A
- Fruits and Vegetables are rich sources of Vitamins
- Deficiency can be completed by food fortification.
Vitamin D
- Vitamin D deficiency affects 70 – 90% population of India
- It causes growth problems, knocked knee etc.
- As Indian are vegetarian, they don’t get enough Vitamin D from vegetable food
- In order to get Vitamin D, sunlight between 11 am to 1 pm is best time
- Salmon is good source of vitamin D
- Fortification of milk and edible oil provides 1/3 of daily requirement of nutrients
