- According the United Nation, half of the global population has lacking of safe sanitation and every day 800 children under age of 5 die from diarrhea related unsafe water, poor hygiene and sanitation.
- Inadequate sanitation spread human waste into rivers, lakes and soil contaminating the water resource out feet.
- Every toilet is properly sited and connected to manage sanitation system that collect and dispose of human waste that prevent spreading into the ground water.
Global sanitation Crisis
- Almost 3.6 billion people are living with poor quality of toilets that affect the health and pollute the environment. Every day, more than 800 children die from diarrhea related unsafe water, poor hygiene and sanitation.
- This year we focus on the impact of the sanitation crisis on groundwater.
- Poor sanitation system spread human waste into rivers, lakes and soil polluting water resources. This is critical problem but it is invisible because it is underground.
- Natural groundwater is most abundant source of fresh water for drinking water, sanitation, farming, industry and ecosystems.
- A safe toilet word means a toilet not shared with other household that disposes human waste at site, stores it safely and empty somewhere else. People living with safely managed sanitation systems use shared facilities.
- Almost 500 million people use open defecation and 3.6 million people nearly half of the total population don’t have any safely managed sanitation.
- Urban and rural area faces different challenges. In urban areas, pit latrines and septic tanks are closed to water points creates potentially serious health risk however in rural areas, more space available but open defecation problem.
Sustainable Development Goal 6.0
- According to Sustainable Development Goal 6.2 is to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.
- Now, world need to work four times faster to meet the target as only 8 years remaining to achieve target.
Key message to World
- Safe sanitation protects ground water
- Sanitation must withstand climate change
- Sanitation action is urgent
How does inadequate affects groundwater?
- Climate change impacts
- Sewerage outfall
- Irrigation with untreated waste water
- Solid and liquid waste that accumulates in onsite sanitation systems disposal by landfill
