Pamban Bridge: History
- The Pamban Bridge has been constructed with sacred place named Pamban, it is a place where lord RAMA has an arrow to the ground to get water to quench thirst of Goddess Sita.
- The construction of bridge started in the year 1887 and completed in the year 1912 as project of South India Railway. German Engineer Scherzer designed the central part of the bridge.
Pamban Bridge Length
- This bridge connects between Rameswaram Island and Mainland Island.
- The Pamban Bridge is located at just 7 km from Rameshwaram. It is first Sea Bridge constructed in India.
- This bridge is second longest bridge in India after Bandra – Worli Sea link.
- This bridge is built in the shape of arch with length of 2.3 km (Road Bridge) and 2.6 km (Rail Bridge).
- It has 43 pillars supporting the structure and 64 pillars built in the sea.

- The Pamban rail bridge is longest rail bridge in India.
- The Indian railway upgraded this bridge to carry broad gauge trains by 2007.

- The road bridge is constructed is in parallel with the rail bridge and it is known as Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge.
