Objective of National Bamboo Mission

The meaning of NBM is National Bamboo Mission. The main objective of National Bamboo Mission is given here.

  • To increase the area under bamboo plantation in non forest government and private lands for supplement income for farmers and contribute towards resilience to climate change as well as availability of quality raw material requirement of industries.
  • The bamboo plantations will be promoted predominantly in farmers’ fields, community lands, homes, waste lands, water bodies, along with irrigation canals etc.
  • To improve post-harvest management near the source of production, primary treatment and seasoning plants, preservation technologies and market infrastructure.
  • To promote product development keeping in view market demand, entrepreneurship, assisting R&D, business models at micro, small and medium levels and feed bigger industry.
  • To reconstruct the under developed bamboo industry in India
  • To promote skill development, awareness generation for development of bamboo sector from production to market demand
  • To reduce import of bamboo and its products and suitability of domestic raw material for industry, so as to enhance income of the bamboo producers

Bamboo Sector Development

  • The union agriculture minister approved formation of advisory group for the development in the Bamboo sector. The advisory group consists of academicians, researchers, progressive entrepreneurs, designers, farmer leaders, marketing specialists and policy makers.
  • The restructured national bamboo mission (NBM) was launched during 2018 – 19, a centered sponsored scheme.
  • The NBM focus on value chain of Bamboo sector to link growers with consumers starting from planting material, plantation, collection of bamboo, processing, marketing for micro, small & medium enterprises, skilled manpower and brand building initiative in a cluster approach mode.

 

Key Output of Bamboo Mission

  • The bamboo industry phase change by opening of multiple avenues of the resource utilization due to interventions through policy.
  • Recently, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal of the Bengaluru (Kempagowda) Airport in which the versatility of bamboo as an architectural and structural material has been proved and the destiny of this green resource defined as the ‘green steel’.
  • Ecofriendly moldable granules from Bamboo can replace the use of plastic.
  • Bamboo is a reliable source for ethanol and bio energy production due to its fast rate of growth and abundance.
  • The bamboo based lifestyle products cutleries, home decors, handicrafts and cosmetics also are in a growth path. The National Bamboo Mission is to bring the benefits of this growing sector to the farmers.
