ILPPW ( International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week )
- The International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is observed from 23 – 29th October, third week of October every year.
- This year’s 2022 campaign for IIPPW is – Stay No to lead poisoning.
- The main focus is to reduce use of lead in petrol, paint and those paints to which students directly exposed in playground, homes and schools.

ILPPW Campaign
This year’s campaign includes 10 years action plan to eliminate lead paint. The main focus is to
- Raise awareness about health effect due to lead exposure
- Action to eliminate lead paint
- Highlight the efforts of countries to prevent lead exposure, particularly in children
Impact of Lead
- The lead is toxicant that will affect the neurological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and hematological systems.
- It will reduce intellectual ability to young children as compared to adults.
- According to WHO report, nearly half of 2 million lives lost due to lead exposure in the year 2019. Worldwide, almost 21.7 million years to lost to disability due to lead exposure. The lead acid battery of vehicles consumes more than 75% of the lead.

Lead Poisoning Long term Effects
- Hematological effect anaemia, headache, irritability, depression mu neurological disturbances, muscle weakness, tremors and impaired hearings, gastrointestinal disorders and kidney dysfunction.
- Chronic exposure includes heart disease, stroke and hypertension. The reproduction effect of lead decreased sperm counts and increased number of abnormal sperm.

Lead Prevention
- Use of fuel cell instead of lead batteries in vehicles in phased manner
- Phase out use of lead in paints
- Eliminate use of lead solder in water pipes, food and drink canes
- Eliminate use of lead glazing for eating, cooking and drinking
- Removal of use of lead from plumbing in phased manner
- Eliminate use of lead in medicines and cosmetics

What is lead paint?
- The paint includes lacquers, stains, enamels, glazes, primers, coating and varnishes.
- The lead compounds are added to some solvent based pains ( glass paints ).
- The lead content of paint can go from under 90 ppm (90 mg/kg) to more than 100 000 ppm (100 000 mg/kg).
