Course outcome are specific statement of what students will be able to do after successfully complete course. They are always written in a

  • Student centered
  • Measurable fashion that is concise, meaningful and achievable
  • Describe to students what is expected of them
  • Lean from and make changes to curriculum to improve student learning
  • Assess how the outcome of course align with outcome of program

Learning outcome help students

  • Anticipate what they will gain from course outcome
  • Know in advance how they will be assessed

Element of learning outcome

Student centered

  • Outcomes are written in language that can be easily understood by students

Measurable

  • Outcomes are higher order thinking and are consistent with department or program learning outcomes or objectives

Concise ( Give information Clearly )

  • Outcomes are written in short sentences

Meaningful

  • Outcomes are higher order thinking and are consistent with department or program learning outcomes or objectives

Achievable

  • Number of outcomes are according to intake of students and is achievable within the time available

Outcome based

  • Outcome should specify the skills and knowledge of students. It must demonstrate to prove mastery instead of focusing of assignment format.

  • Exhibit memory of previously learned material by recalling facts, term, basic concepts and answers

Understanding ( L2 )

  • Demonstrate understanding of facts and ideas by organizing, comparing, interpreting, giving description and stating main ideas

Applying ( L3 )

  • Solve problems to new situations by applying acquired knowledge, facts, techniques and rules in a different way

Analyzing ( L4 )

  • Examine and break information into parts by identifying motives or causes. 
  • Make inference and find evidence to support generalizations.

Evaluating ( L5 )

  • Present and defend opinions by making judgement about information, validity of ideas or quality of work based on a set of criteria
