  • Magnolia and Scuppernong grapes are known as low sugar and acid content which is to make dessert wine.
  • Aestivalis is American species of grapes also known as Norton and Lenior grape which has high sugar, low acid content used for making dry wines.
  • Labrusca that has low sugar and pH level used for eating but also makes a few sweet wines.
  • Vinifera, also known as “the vine that bears wine”, is mostly found in Europe and parts of Asia, but also in California; this grape is used to make wine. This species is also the ideal type for raisins and for transporting, since the sugar content acts as a preserve.
  • Grapes are so useful in that every part of it can be used for culinary purposes.
  • The skins can be used for food coloring and the pulp and juice can be used for jams, raisins and wines.
  • The seeds are used as oil and the leaves for dolmas. Grape skins contain resveratrol, which is a powerful antioxidant that may prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease.
  • Compounds in grapes help fight cancer, heart disease, degenerative nerve disease and others.
  • The antioxidant helps to lower the levels of cholesterol circulating in the body and hence reduces cholesterol deposition in the arteries. Several studies have shown that the antioxidant also has protective effect against prostate cancer.
  • Glucose sugar helps in better storage of grapes than fructose sugar. If the sugar content in the grapes is more, its self-life is more and vice versa.
  • The berry obtained from low nitrogen applied vines show better shelf life.
