What is FFRC?
The full form of FFRC is Food Fortification research centre.
What is Food Fortification?
- The food fortification is addition of vitamins, minerals such as Iodine, Zinc, Vitamins A and D in staple food such as rice, wheat, oil, milk and salt to improve nutrition content in food.
- This nutrition may / may not originally present in the food before processing or lost during processing.
Logo of Fortified Food
- The meaning of Fortified Food logo: The square represents completeness, square represents micronutrient fortification to daily need having more to live, the ring around capital F is ring of good protection of health and blue colour represent purity, health and active life.
Tagline of Fortified Food
- It has tagline of SAMPOORNA POSHAN SWASTH JEEVAN
Need Fortification of Food / Micronutrient
- It is known well known issue but health rises due to deficiency of micronutrients. People does not get micronutrient due to lack of consumption of balanced diet. There is loss of nutrient due to processing of food such as roasting/boiling/frying. The fortification of food provides such micronutrient.
- According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) Night Blindness, Goitre, Anaemia and various birth defects occurs due to deficiency of micronutrient by Vitamin A, Iodine, Iron and Folic Acid.
According to NFHS report
- 58.4 percent of children (6-59 months) are anaemic
- 53.1 percent women in the reproductive age group are anaemic
- 35.7 percent of children under 5 are underweight
Benefits of Fortification
- Food Fortification has a high benefit-to-cost ratio. The Copenhagen Consensus estimates that every 1 Rupee spent on fortification results in 9 Rupees in benefits to the economy. It requires an initial investment to purchase both the equipment and the vitamin and mineral premix, but the overall costs of fortification are extremely low. Following are the various benefits of fortification of foods:
- Nutrients are added to main or staple foods of because they are widely consumed by people. In this way, large number of people improve their health.
- The addition of micronutrients to food is safe option and it does not cause any health risk to people. As it is added in small quantity but daily consumption provides enough nutrient.
- Cost effective
- Pattern of food consumption does not change so people accepted very easily
- It does not alter test of food or texture of food
